The Leetonia Coke Ovens Arboretum is a complex of 200 beehive ovens. The purpose of these ovens was to transform coal into coke. It was constructed by the Leetonia Iron and Coal Company in order to supply coke for pig iron producing blast furnaces that used coke as fuel. The coke ovens were opened in 1866 and was one of the largest operations of it's kind in the nation. They were closed in 1930 due to the great depression.
